Hyozu-taisha Shrine and the Yatsugasaki Ritual

There is a legend that the deity worshipped at this shrine reached its current location by crossing Lake Biwa. In fall every year, a ritual is held on the shores of the lake in which the chief priest enters the water with the goshintai, the object of worship at the shrine, and bathes it in the lake; another example of the strength of the connection between water and prayers in the region.
