This temple has been responsible for the safety of travel on the waters of Lake Biwa since the Azuchi Momoyama period. With stone walls and a moat, it has a unique appearance more of a castle than a temple. The way the moat goes around the entire grounds and links to the canals and waterways running to Lake Biwa itself shows clearly even today the connection between water and everyday lifestyles.
