People's Hostel Hokoso

The Nagahama Taikou-Onsen hot spring water that you can bathe in at Hokoso is rich in iron content, and flows up from the ruins of Nagahama-jo Castle. The water is rust-brown colored, retains its heat well, and is said to be effective at alleviating women's problems, nerve pain, rheumatism, and even infertility. It also became known as the “child giving waters” after Lord Hideyoshi finally had his first child after moving to Nagahama Castle.

The publicly operated people’s hostel Hokoso is located in Ho Park, the site of the remains of Nagahama-jo Castle with its links to feudal lord Hideyoshi Toyotomi. The park offers not only a fantastic view of Lake Biwa, but also beautiful cherry blossoms in the spring time (early - late April). The meals also make full use of local, seasonal ingredients, including Omi beef and fish caught fresh from the lake. The duck in the winter is particularly delicious.
