[Cherry Blossom] Saikyo-ji Temple Cherry Blossoms

Saikyo-ji Temple was built by Prince Shotoku and renovated by the monk Shinsei. It is the head of the Tendai Shinsei Sect, which has more than 450 branch temples across Japan.
A place of training in commandments and prayer, prayers have been chanted here every single day all the way up to modern times.

Saikyo-ji Temple was razed to the ground during the Siege of Mount Hiei.
It was rebuilt by Mitsuhide Akechi, and Akechi family graves can still be found here!

While Saikyo-ji Temple is wreathed in a profound and quiet atmosphere, it's also a famous spot for cherry blossoms!

The path leading from the main gate is lined with cherry trees which blossom beautifully every springtime.

200 trees, including Yoshino cherry, are planted along the path into the temple, in front of the main hall, and throughout the gardens.
You can see blossoms everywhere in the grounds!

The best time for viewing is the start of April. You can see Lake Biwa beyond the blossoms, pairing full-blooming cherry trees with the greatest lake in Japan.

When the weather is fine you can even see as far as Mt. Mikami!

There are also four different gardens, created from the Momoyama period (1573 - 1603) through to the start of the Edo period (1603 - 1868), each with their own unique style.

Enjoy a quiet walk through these peaceful grounds while taking in the beautiful cherry trees!
