[Cherry Blossom] Lake Biwa Canal Cherry Blossoms

One of the best spots for cherry blossoms in Otsu is the Lake Biwa Canal,
which is located only a short distance on foot from the Keihan Mii-dera Station.

The incredibly popular Mii-dera Temple is also located nearby,
allowing you to make a detour while enjoying the blossoms all around!

The Lake Biwa Canal is a waterway that was constructed during the Meiji period (1868-1912) in order to transport Lake Biwa water to Kyoto.

Around 660 cherry trees, mainly Japanese cherry,
grow along the canal in the vicinity of the first tunnel, and the area throngs with walkers enjoying a stroll along both the waterway and the trees during the blossom season.

The cherry trees along the Lake Biwa Canal start from the water intake at Kannonji Temple and run all the way to the Kannondo at Mii-dera Temple!

The Lake Biwa Canal has a really retro atmosphere!

You can also catch a glimpse of the cherry trees from the Keihin train line, which runs along the Lake Biwa Canal.

The atmosphere around the waterway changes completely at night. Just look at those beautiful nighttime blossom!

The area is illuminated at night during the blooming period.

Enjoy a magical atmosphere, completely different from during the daytime!
