Mii-dera Temple is one of the most famous spots for cherry blossoms in all of Kansai region.
It has been loved as a place to view the blossoms since the 7th century.
The "Night Bell at Mii-dera Temple" is also famous as one of the "Eight Views of Omi", and is counted as one of the three great bells of Japan.
Of these three bells, only the night bell at Mii-dera Temple still sounds the same as it did long ago,
sending a beautiful sound pealing out over Otsu every evening.
It is also famous for being used as the bells on New Year's Eve!
Once springtime comes around, Mii-dera Temple is transformed by a tumult of cherry blossoms,
with more than 1000 tress blooming in the grounds. Needless to say, the temple throngs with visitors.
Mii-dera Temple is located part way up Mt. Nagarayama,
to the south-west of Lake Biwa, allowing you to enjoy the blossoms while looking out over the lake.
The scenery from the viewing platform is also quite incredible!
The buildings registered as National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties are surrounded by a torrent of Yoshino cherry,
Japanese cherry and weeping cherry.
The entire grounds are covered in gorgeous pink!
Once night falls, the blooming trees and the historical buildings are all brilliantly illuminated,
placing the cherry trees against the sparkling night sky.
