The visit of Hikone’s castle and its surroundings was definitely a lot of fun. Meeting with Hikonyan, riding the rikshaw, entering this centuries-old castle, learning about the history of the city… We think everybody can find his interest. We would like to give a special mention to the rikshaw driver, who was really funny and shared his knowledge about the city’s history with passion.
Hikone Castle sits beautifully on top of a hill overlooking Hikone and Biwako.
Make sure you are ready for the long stone step climb to the top. But do to take time to enjoy the beauty.
Up close the castle seems much humbler and it is hard to believe you can see it from miles around.
Don't forget to take your shoes off at the entrance to the castle.
Inside, the wood truly shows the age of the castle.
Wow, people were short back then.
Various artifacts from the construction of the castle and throughout history.
Ceramic decorations.
Here comes Hikonyan! Tight fit thru the door.
Hikonyan puts a smile on everyone's face.
Dancing cat!
We are in the presence of the cutest mascot in the world.
The smartest Rikshaw driver in Japan!
Incredible! And I live here!
Stupid faces cannot always be avoided.
Hikone Castle Moat.
You cannot believe the leaves around the castle!
Remains of the outer castle wall.
Our mobile classroom and hardworking teacher.
The castle somehow manages to peak thru the trees and into view from just about everywhere.

Once again my face ruins the beautiful scenery.
Rolling thru the streets of Hikone in style.
Headed down castle road.
Cannot quite compete with that pose.
